Van 17 tot en met 20 september 2009 is Amsterdam weer de animatiehoofdstad van Europa. Vier dagen lang kunnen jong, oud en iedereen er tussenin, genieten van het beste dat animatie te bieden heeft: korte en lange animatiefilms, workshops, speciale vertoningen en randactiviteiten zorgen binnen en buiten de zalen van Kriterion, De Balie, De Uitkijk en galerie Chiellerie voor een verrassend, geanimeerd festival.

2 Nederlandse premières: Brendan and the Secret of Kells en Mary and Max op KLIK!
Tijdens het KLIK! Amsterdam Animatie Festival kunnen we met gepaste trots twee premières presenteren van zeer bijzondere animatiefilms: de epische Europese co-produktie Brendan and the Secret of Kells en de duister komische klei-animatie Mary and Max.

De jonge Brendan leeft in een zwaar beschut fort waar zijn oom, abt Cellach de dienst uitmaakt. Terwijl abt Cellach geobsedeerd is met het alsmaar beter beveiligen van het fort tegen de bendes kwaadaardige Vikingen, droomt Brendan van avontuur. Wanneer broeder Aidan, de legendarische schrijver van het mythische boek van Iona arriveert, schakelt hij de hulp van Brendan in om het boek af te schrijven. Terwijl Brendan met de hulp van de bosnimf Aisling avonturen beleeft, wordt de dreiging van de Vikingen steeds hachelijker. De stem van abt Cellach is ingesproken door Brendan Gleeson, bekend van de Harry Potter films, Beowulf en In Bruges.

In Mary and Max neemt de achtjarige Mary Daisy Dinkle in een opwelling een pagina uit een telefoonboek en schrijft ene Max Jerry Horowitz een brief. Max is een neurotische Joodse man van veertig met het syndroom van Asperger en overgewicht die besluit de briefwisseling aan te gaan en zo ontvouwt zich een vriendschap die twee continenten en twee decennia overspant. Regisseur Adam Elliot won in 2004 een Oscar voor de beste korte animatiefilm met Harvey Krumpet, een film over zonderling die lijdt aan Tourette en chronische pech. De stem van Mary werd ingesproken door Toni Colette (Little Miss Sunshine) en de stem van Max werd ingesproken door Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote). Daarnaast lenen Eric Bana (Munich) en Barry Humphrey (Dame Edna) ook hun stemmen aan de film.

Dutch premieres of Brendan and the Secret of Kells and Mary and Max!

During the KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival we present, with appropriate feelings of pride, two Dutch premières of two very remarkable and special animated feature films: the epic European co-production Brendan and the Secret of Kells and the darkly humorous claymation film Mary and Max.

During the middle ages in Ireland, a young boy called Brendan lives in a heavily fortified abbey watched over by his uncle, the imposing abbot Cellach. While abbot Cellach is obsessed with keeping the Viking raiders out by building higher and thicker walls, Brendan dreams of adventuring outside the abbey’s confinement. When the legendary scribe brother Aidan, writer of the mythical book of Iona arrives, he quickly enlists Brendan to help him finish the book. While Brendan explores the forests and befriends a sprite called Aisling, the growing threat of the Viking hordes casts a dark shadow over the lands. The character abbot Cellach was voiced by Brendan Gleeson who stars in the Harry Potter films, Beowulf and In Bruges.

In Mary and Max, the precocious Australian eight year old Mary Daisy Dinkle picks a random name off a page out of the New York phone book and writes a letter to a certain Max Jerry Horowitz. Max is a neurotic Jewish man in his forties with Asperger’s and a weight problem who decides to write back to Mary, which is the start of a friendship that lasts two decades and spans two continents. Director Adam Elliot won the Oscar for the best animated short in 2004 for his film Harvey Krumpet, a tale of a unfortunate misfit who has Tourette’s and chronic bad luck. The adult Mary is voiced by Toni Colette (Little Miss Sunshine) while Max was voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote). Other voice talents includes Eric Bana (Munich) and Barry Humphrey AKA Dame Edna.

Nederlandse première BRENDAN AND THE SECRET OF KELLS - KLIK! Amsterdam Animatie Festival

Bridge Entertainment Group nodigt u van harte uit tot het bijwonen van de persvoorstelling van de bijzondere animatiefilm BRENDAN AND THE SECRET OF KELLS van regisseur Tomm Moore, waarin vijandige Vikings, een heidense slangengod, een woudgeest, een zonderling meisje en veel meer het pad kruisen van de 12-jarige weesjongen Brendan in zijn triomfantelijke tocht om meester illustrator te worden en een waardevol boek af te maken.

De persvoorstelling vindt plaats op donderdag 17 september, 15.15u in de screeningroom van UPI, Koningin Wilhelminaplein 2-4, Amsterdam.

De Nederlandse première vindt plaats op het KLIK! Amsterdam Animatie Festival waarvan de derde editie van 17 tot en met 20 september plaatsvindt in filmtheater Kriterion, De Balie, De Uitkijk en de Chiellerie te Amsterdam. Op dit multimediale festival kan men onder andere genieten van korte animatiefilms uit alle hoeken van de wereld, interactief gamevermaak en fascinerende randanimatie.

Korte inhoud
Ierland, 9de Eeuw.
Brendan, een opgewekte en goedlachse weesjongen van 12 leeft in de abdij van Kells dat verscholen ligt in een verlaten groene vallei. Hij wordt er streng opgevoed door zijn oom, de abt Cellach, die de abdij met ijzeren hand leidt. Op een dag ontmoet hij de oude broeder Aidan. Deze ietwat vreemde man is een meester in het illustreren en houdt een buitengewoon, nog onvoltooid boek in bewaring. Enthousiast en begeesterd door deze ontmoeting laat Brendan zich meeslepen door de lokroep van de creativiteit en verbeelding. Hij heeft slechts nog één doel voor ogen: zelf meester illustrator worden en het waardevolle boek van Kells afwerken.

Hij weet uiteindelijk te ontsnappen aan de sterke greep van zijn oom en waagt zich buiten de muren van Kells.

In de omringende wouden staan hem talloze gevaren en avonturen te wachten en riskeert hij zelfs de dood. Met de hulp van een 12-jarig zonderling meisje zal hij zijn grootste angsten trotseren. Vijandige Vikings, een heidense slangengod en een woudgeest kruisen het pad van Brendan tijdens zijn schrikbarende en triomfantelijke tocht naar verbeelding.

Van 17 tot en met 20 september 2009 is Amsterdam weer de animatiehoofdstad van Europa. Vier dagen lang kunnen jong, oud en iedereen er tussenin, genieten van het beste dat animatie te bieden heeft: korte en lange animatiefilms, workshops, speciale vertoningen en randactiviteiten zorgen binnen en buiten de zalen van Kriterion, De Balie, De Uitkijk en galerie Chiellerie voor een verrassend, geanimeerd festival.

Het KLIK! Amsterdam Animatie Festival wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Gemeente Amsterdam, het SNS Reaal fonds, Boomerang Create, TVPaint, Adobe, The Drawing Room, Kriterion, De Balie, De Uitkijk en Chiellerie.

Programmering: vier dagen vol animatie
De hoofdmoot van het festival bestaat uit de internationale Open Competitie programma’s en Studenten Competitieprogramma’s, die samengesteld zijn uit de ruim 600 ingezonden films afkomstig uit meer dan 50 landen. Waar de jury, onder leiding van Britse animator Phil Mulloy, in de Open Competitie bepaalt welke film de winnaar wordt, is het de eer aan het publiek om de prijs in de Studenten Competitie weg te geven. De nieuwe KLIK! Awards zijn een speciaal ontwerp van beeldhouwer Joost van den Toorn.

Naast de competitieprogramma’s zijn voor deze editie twee uitdagende thema’s gekozen die aantonen dat animatie een volwassen medium is waarmee controversiële onderwerpen kunnen worden aangesneden en ontleed op een luchtige en vaak humoristische wijze. Voor het eerste thema, de politiek geëngageerde animatiefilm, wordt tijdens KLIK! voor het eerst in Nederland een speciale onderscheiding uitgereikt aan de beste politiek geëngageerde animatiefilm. Het tweede thema, erotische animatie, zal in samenwerking met het NIAF en Amerikaanse animatie historicus Dennis Nyback worden uitgediept in historische en hedendaagse panorama-programma’s en in de late uurtjes menigeen rode oren bezorgen. Gastland dit jaar is het ambitieuze Brazilië. Het Braziliaanse Ministerie van Cultuur startte vorig jaar een stimuleringsproject om de animatiesector naar een hoger plan te tillen. De vruchten daarvan kunnen geplukt worden in het verzamelprogramma met de beste hedendaagse Braziliaanse animatiefilms.

Op het festival wordt de animatiefilm als medium omlijst door workshops, korte presentaties en Q&A’s met aanwezige filmmakers en animatiedeskundigen. KLIK! vestigt daarnaast aandacht op vernieuwende games die het grensgebied tussen spel en animatie verkennen door middel van presentaties en veel speelbaar gamevermaak voor de bezoekende homo ludens.

Gedurende het festival zijn er elke dag meerdere activiteiten om de festivalgangers buiten de bioscoopzaal voortdurend te animeren.

Grootmeester van de subversieve animatie: Phil Mulloy is hoofd van de jury
Alles wat het menselijk ras tot een lopende smakeloze grap maakt is al achttien jaar een dankbaar onderwerp voor de gelauwerde onafhankelijke animator Phil Mulloy. Mulloy’s films kenmerken zich door een strakke stijl waarin uitgemergelde personages de menselijke zwakheden in zwart, wit en grote vegen rood uitbeelden. Zijn in zwarte humor gedrenkte films drijven de spot met georganiseerde religie, (seksuele) taboes, politiek en onverdraagzaamheid. Op deze manier houdt hij het publiek een grotesk vervormde lachspiegel voor. Naast een workshop gegeven door de Britse animator zelf zal Mulloy’s werk het onderwerp zijn van een uniek retrospectief. Mulloy: “Ik zie mezelf niet als cynicus, meer als satiricus. Het is maar een film natuurlijk, maar als ik mensen met een afwijkende mening het gevoel kan geven dat ze niet alleen zijn, draagt dat misschien een steentje bij aan de wereld.” www.philmulloy.com

Animatie = Kunst: Originele werken in de Animatie Chiellerie
KLIK! promoot animatie in al haar verschijningsvormen en presenteert met gepaste trots een spiksplinternieuwe animatiegalerie in één van de gezelligste kunstbroedplaatsen van de stad: de Chiellerie. In de doorlopende expositie van beeldende kunst en illustraties kan voor een schappelijke prijs een origineel kunstwerk van één van de deelnemende animatoren, cartoonisten en kunstenaars aangeschaft worden. De speciale KLIK!-boot vaart tussen de festivallocaties en zo kan op aangename wijze een vaartochtje door de hoofdstedelijke grachten gecombineerd worden met een artistieke excursie.

Niet wachten tot september? KLIK! activiteiten deze zomer
Naast het jaarlijks terugkerende festival is KLIK! het hele jaar door actief met vertoningen, evenementen en thema-feesten ter meerdere eer en glorie van het fenomeen animatie. Zo organiseert KLIK! in samenwerking met partnerfestivals Rated X Alternative Erotica Film Festival en het Balkan Snapshots Film Festival in Filmtheater/Café Kriterion het NACHTKINO initiatief om de Midnight Movie terug te brengen in Amsterdam. In de aanloop naar het festival vertoont KLIK! een speciaal Gothic filmprogramma op het Summer Darkness Dark Underground Lifestyle Festival in Utrecht en organiseert KLIK! twee pixelatie workshops op het Pluk de Nacht Open Air Film Festival op zondag 9 en woensdag 12 augustus, waarvan de resultaten na de hoofdfilm op het grote scherm worden vertoond. Four Days of Animation: check out our selection online
The main body of the festival is formed by our international Open Competition programmes and our Student Competition programme, which have been comprised from over 700 films from over 50 countries. Our professional jury, led by the British underground animator Phil Mulloy will decide who will win in our Open Competition, while our devoted audience gets to vote on the best film in the Student Competition. The new KLIK! Awards have been especially designed for the festival by the renowned sculptor Joost van den Toorn. A list of the selected films can be seen on our website.

Besides the Competition programmes the festival revolves around two main themes, chosen for their ability to showcase the power of animation as an adult medium that is perfectly suited to tackle sensitive and controversial subjects in an accessible and often humorous way. The themes are Political Animation and Erotic Animation. For the first time in the brief but eventful history of the festival, a special award has been created for the best politically motivated animated film. The illustrious American film historian Dennis Nyback will present a special programme filled with historic scintillating animation and our own erotic panorama programmes are guaranteed to tittilate and tease.

The country in focus this year is funky Brasil. The Brasilian Department for the Arts started a project to stimulate the Brasilian animation sector last year and we’ve reaped the rewards and will present a compilation filled with the best animated films made in recent times.

Besides screening animated films, the festival also focuses on animation through workshops, Q&A’s with filmmakers, animation experts and game designers and short presentations. KLIK! also examines the fertile breeding grounds between animation and cutting edge computer games with events and lots of gaming pleasures for gamer girls and boys of all ages. During the festival a plethora of activities and surprising events will ensure that the festival going public is animated and entertained inside and outside of the cinema.

Grandmaster of Subversive Animation: Phil Mulloy, head of the Jury.
Everything that makes the human race such a tasteless walking tasteless joke has been a thankful subject for the films of the deviously distinguished independent animator Phil Mulloy for the past two decades. Mulloy’s films are characterized by a Spartan style and emaciated, grotesque characters who exemplify our basic human weaknesses in black, white and spurts of red. His films are drenched in black humor and mock organized religion, sexual taboos, politics and intolerance with acerbic wit. They function as grotesque fun house mirrors, showing us our own warped and wicked ways. Besides spearheading the jury, Mulloy will also give an exclusive workshop and his work will be shown in a unique retrospective. Mulloy has stated that he doesn’t see himself as a cynic, but considers himself more of a satirist who hopes his films make people who deviate from the norm feel like they’re not alone in the world. www.philmulloy.com

Animation = Art: Original Artwork in the Chiellerie
KLIK! promotes animation in all its guises and it is with great pride that we present our swanky animation gallery in a new incarnation in one of the hippest hot spots in Amsterdam: the Chiellerie. At this ongoing exhibition of illustrated work and other art forms, cartoonists, animators and illustrators showcase their original art works which can be bought for a modest fee. Our own KLIK! ship will ferry festival goers between locations and in this way, a canal trip through our beautiful city can be combined with patronage to the arts.

Can’t wait until September? KLIK! activities this summer
Besides the Festival, KLIK! is active throughout the year with special events, screenings and activities. KLIK! is present at the Summer Darkness Dark Underground Lifestyle Festival in Utrecht to screen some ghoulishly Gothic animated fare. Furthermore, at the Pluk de Nacht Open Air Film Festival KLIK! will organize two pixellation workshops on Sunday the 9th and Wednesday the 12th of August.
