His company The 3-D Revolution was established a few years later and now has Aardman Animations, Atlantic Productions and Passion Pictures as its clients. In his masterclass, Alexander will discuss 3-D stereoscopic cinematography in all its facets: not only the technical side of it, but even explaining the anatomical aspects, how it influences the script and storyboard up until the final result on the silver screen. | |
The Art Before the Animation – Masterclass concept art by Wouter Tulp and Patrick Schoenmaker Friday November 9, 11h00, EYE Cinema 2 // Get tickets Award-winning artists Wouter Tulp, illustrator, and Patrick Schoenmaker, animator, join forces to share their knowledge with you through this special masterclass. With their different but overlapping backgrounds, they meet one another in the middle ground of concept art for animated films. The dynamic duo will share their tricks of the trade with you, not only by being a couple of talking heads, but also by explaining themselves through the magic of live drawing! Wouter Tulp has been working freelance as an illustrator since graduating the Willem de Kooning Academy in 2001. Where his work covers a broad spectrum with caricatures and illustrations for both magazines and children’s books, the past few years Wouter has been focusing more and more on character design and making concept art for animated films. We quote: “What I find enjoyable in the concept phase of an animation project is all options being open still. It is an enormously creative phase within the project in which the designer forms the story and the look of the film with original ideas and proposals.” After wandering around for a while in the fields of comics, traditional art and games, Patrick Schoenmaker graduated as an animator from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2009. While he’s still a multitasker illustrating, designing toys and making maquettes, his main focus is on animation and design for animated films. Patrick won KLIK!’s Student Award in 2010, worked in Ireland on the Oscar-nominated animated feature The Secret of Kells and you might just have spotted his art direction skills in the Dutch cinemas this year, in the animated short Snapshot that screened before Madagascar 3. | |
Animation + Comic = Motion Comic? – A look into The Art of Pho and the future of comics Friday November 9, 13h00, EYE Cinema 2 // Get tickets Motion comics look like a traditional comic, but are enriched with animation, audio and sometimes even interaction. The Art of Pho has it all – this ‘interactive comic’, nominated for two Webby awards, tells the moving and surreal story of a small creature called Little Blue in a series of short animated and interactive episodes. It was adapted from an existing comic by Submarine Channel, an Amsterdam based company that has been experimenting with motion comics since 2001. Its creative producer Remco Vlaanderen will briefly lead you through the history of motion comics, displaying the greatest but also the weaker motion comics out there. After a screening of The Art of Pho, Remco will be joined by the motion comic’s director Lois van Baarle and interaction developer Karel Brascamp to talk about the choises they made within the creative process and their view on combining comics, animation and interaction. | |

Tough issues will be addressed like how to make use of social media for business purposes without getting annoying, the ever-present doubts about putting your animated short out there on the internet or not, and selling yourself and your work through crowdfunding being just a shy animator. This hands-on workshop is moderated by internet guru Ernst-Jan Pfauth and includes guest appearances by Lois van Baarle (widely known on the web as Loish, image on the left is made by her), Cinecrowd co-founder Floris Parlevliet and animator Frodo Kuipers, amongst other animators active on the web. | |
Towards a Full-Fledged Industry – Debate on the evolution of the animation sector in the Netherlands Friday November 9, 16h30, EYE Cinema 2 // Get tickets Although the Netherlands is full of talented filmmakers, our small country just doesn’t seem to get a stable industry started. “Why is that?” we’ll ask ourselves – and especially you – in this informal debate. Is there something wrong with our methods of developing talent? Are we missing something? Perhaps our talent is simply not visible enough? What kind of infrastructure would the Netherlands require in order for its industry to be able to bloom? How can the growing yet still fragile evolution of feature films persist into a more stable production flow of animated films? While a lot of very promising steps have been taken in the past few years, the probably disappearance of the Netherlands Institute for Animation Film means the vanishment of one of the very few stable assets animation in the Netherlands owned. If there is a right time to contemplate the past, the present and most important the future of the situation of Animation of the Netherlands, it definitively is now. We ask you to come and share your ideas – the debate will function as an incubator for sharing visions and asking questions.
